Hickory Chiropractor - Disc Herniation Treatment
Hickory Spine Chiropractic - Dr. Brad Shook, DC, DAAMLP - Updated 12-23-20

Chiropractic treatment for spinal disc herniations can be helpful in a lot of cases. It's important to understand that there are different types of disc herniations with varying degrees of severity, and depending on how the disc is herniated, and more importantly the amount of neurological deficit (how the herniation is decreasing nerve function due to compression or chemical inflammation) will ultimately determine if you are a candidate for chiropractic treatment.
If you have significant impairment of neurological function (loss of muscle strength, diminished sensation or reflexes) then an MRI will likely be recommended if you have not already had one. If you have had an MRI, and if you have neurological deficit, we will refer you to a neurosurgeon for evaluation so that they can determine if chiropractic care is appropriate based on your unique case.

Chiropractic Treatment for Disc Herniations
There are several types of chiropractic treatment that may be recommended for a disc herniation. We commonly recommend spinal decompression therapy, instrument based spinal adjustments, muscle stimulation, super-pulse laser therapy, hot and cold packs, rehabilitation exercises, and active therapeutic movements that improve nerve/muscle coordination. When multiple forms of chiropractic therapy are used, you have the best chance to improve function and assist the body in healing the disc herniation.
